Forbes Interviews True.com Founder

Email This Entry

Posted by Dave Evans

Tara Weiss at Forbes interviewed Herb Vest.

Choice quotes:

Internet dating is populated, to a large degree, by criminals and married people.

I conquered money, and now I'm looking to conquer love. Our mission is to end divorce in the United States.

We cannot assure you that a felon cannot get on. They certainly can, and certainly have.

We came up with the only scientific compatibility test on the Web.

And my determination to prevent murders, rapes and crime from occurring [none have occurred through the use of the site] has become a passion.

There have been a lot of strong comments against True here lately. The brand and the man behind it certainly raises the ire of certain individuals who go to great lengths to expose the alleged antics of the man. Personally I'm tired of it.

As long as True and Vest make the claims they made in this interview Vest has to expect his personal and business to be investigated.

He knows that, well that why he claims to investigate others. If you dish it out you have to be able to take it.

In the next two months Vest has a lot of damaging issues to protect and hide from the public. I can assure him and the public these will become public.

There are a couple of surprises on the horizon for Vest and not the good kind either.

I myself would like to see a fresh interview without Vest stock statements.

What is the deal with the sleazy ads, lesbians, big breast, etc. Why not take your sleazy business and market to the sex industry and porn sites.

What does Vest think about the new law that will require True to have to label his sit smut?

Why does True require everyone take the test and what is True doing with the information?

Who is SODA? Who is True's advisory board? Why have you not disclosed the problems with the test.

Why does True focus on sex? Who is your team of experts and where is there resumes.

Why the scam on the free trail. Why the race profiling? A the customer service billing issues.

Why claim your site is endorsed by Psychology Today when the fact is you are paying for that endorsement.

Deceptive Trade business practices are prevalent at True. Why haven't you cleaned up the problems?

Are you Ken Lay and don't know about all the problems?

I will give Vest a hint. The information is coming from inside. Vest you have made a lot of enemies in the industry and in your own company. What are you going to do?

Your PR likes to put out how wonderful True is and profitable and favorite dating site. Yet you don't let the media in to find that out for themselves why is that? What are you hiding?

What about all the legal battles? Why hide your lawsuits using your old name TrueBeginnings. Why file against AOL and Yahoo. Harassment of computation and bloggers. Sued Dr. Houran and now your former Detective. How about addressing the claims from your former fiancee which completely contradicts your claims at True.

Why not put your background. If you are going to judge everyone else shouldn't you lead by example?

When you sold HD Vest to Wells Fargo you didn't disclose very vital important information. Why?

Wells Fargo is investigating and may seek damages in the 10+ million range. What are you prepared to do should they take action? Some rumors have you moving assets why?

I was very disappointed with True.com. If they have 5 million members, most of them must be ghosts. They have outdated profiles that don't show how long ago a member last logged on. Though the chatroom is a plus, it's no better than a yahoo or aol. Also, any online company that allows one to join via web should allow you to cancel via web. Requiring members to cancel via phone is ridiculous and is just another way to milk an undeserved $50 from members. If half of the allegations noted about the founder are true, it only further supports the farce that this site is. Anyone truly searching for love/companionship would be better served on Match.com or Eharmony.

I am not happy with True.com. I called to cancel my "free" membership and was talked into staying on by the customer service rep. I was told I would receive an email confirmation, which I did not. I had written down notes from our conversation and when I went to cancel again within the time frame I was given, I was told sorry we charged your credit card yesterday and we don't give refunds of any kind. The "winks" make it difficult to know who is really interested in your profile. Most of the guys that respond look scary or don't even match your requirements. The customer service is laking!!! I think the whole "free" trial membership is so they can charge your credit card and say "Oh, were sorry we don't give refunds". Stay away from their ploy to join for free, because it will cost you in the end.

I agree with you completely. I got roped into the free trial and then they charged my credit card. "We don't give refunds" they told me- Is there anyway to get my money back? I mean isn't there a three day lemon law or something? Stay away from this place its a scam..

True.com is probably making more money on their BILLING SCAM than through actual memberships!

I never recieved any communication from this site after I cancelled my 7 day "free" trial. I was "given" a 30 day free trial, but was not notified. No Notification that my free trial was about to end, etc.

I feel this is a probably widespread scam issue with true.com and perhaps a class action lawsuit and/or strict internet billing rules need to be in place and enforced to protect the consumer!

True.com is a ripoff company. I joined in Jan 2005 for a free trial, At the time, it did NOT mention you had to call to cancel in the membership agreement. So, I cancelled everything online and my card was not charged, So I figured I had cleared everything. Then in Aug 2006. My bank account became overdrawn and I wnadered why, So I looked at my statement and lo and behold there was a $49.99 charge from True! I then called them to find out why they did this and they informed me that I had to cancel over the phone! I asked for a refund but they said they don't give refunds but will cancel my membership! I then asked for this incompetent's supervisor and expalined the situation and he informed that they have been trying to bill me since Feb 2005 and I told him that if he'd really been trying that he would've succeded because I've had the same card for 5 years and that this was a crock of bs! He then told me I should file a fraud report with my bank if I want to get my money back! This is the most horrible experience I've ever had with any internet business. Please stay away from these ppl. if you you have ever joined them please replace your card immediately or you could suffer the same problem.

rue has a malicious cancellation policy, as others here have noted.

In short, I wanted to check out the service for the free week. It only took me three days to decide it was pretty lame. I cancelled online. I made the mistake of calling back the DAY listed to call before. Mind you that I didn't use this site at all. I was charged the fifty bucks to cover the following month. I wanted to cancel right then and there and get a refund, having had a paying account for exactly 1 day. Most decent companies realizing that the account wasn't used and it was the FIRST day of the billing use cycle would refund the ENTIRE amount, or at least a pro-rated amount.

AVOID THEM.

When you cancel on the website, you really haven't cancelled. You need to call them during business hours to fully cancel your account. LAME. No other personal services are like this.

This single-month fee is FAR, FAR greater than any other personal service website. Why? There are many less people on this service than Yahoo personals, match, etc. There are considerably cheaper one month fees on these services. WHY?

This free trial extension period after you decide to cancel online is ultra-lame and designed to give the company a second chance to milk you out of fifty bucks when you forget to call them in time. My mistake was not spending ADDITIONAL time of mine to call them to fully cancel. One day too late and I'm being charged the fifty bucks! What other service does this??

They will not even pro-rate a refund to you. I called them the VERY FIRST DAY of my billing cycle to cancel after seeing the fifty dollar fee and they would NOT refund me a penny!

When I called to cancel ON THE DAY I WAS CHARGED FOR A MONTH - WITHOUT PRO-RATED REFUND OF ANY KIND, I was informed I could keep the service for another month. For one second I thought of the joy of having another month to try to meet a dismally low number of people who are a poor match to me... hmmmm. Do you think they could make sure my account automatically cancelled at the end of that additional month I already paid for? Of course not. If I forgot about the deadline to cancel I would be charged again for yet ANOTHER fifty dollars.

True.com is PURE EVIL. And I am not even kidding. I am completely speechless. I cancelled my "free trial", they told me I still had free time through December, I said I didn't want it, but of course they kept sending me emails. I responded to one (asking what his user name meant -- and even though I'd received a steady stream of emails from him for days, the one response I sent was greeted with a "sorry, I'm pursuing other people, but good luck" message... whaaa?) with the understanding that I was still on my "free" trial. Was charged $49.99 plus $1.99 for some sort of "counseling" fee (???). Called to cancel (for the 3rd time) and have the $51 credited, but was told "I cannot, because your account does not stipulate a credit." Supposedly "every email" they send states that replying to it will reactivate my account. Maybe it did, but I sure don't remember seeing that in the fine print. Either way, they are completely evil and NOT customer friendly. STAY AWAY. Do not be suckered in, it is NOT worth it!!!!!!
